I’m driving cross country from my home in Los Angeles to Cambridge for a journalism fellowship at Harvard. Since I love diving, I decided I try to dive all the sinkholes, quarries and lakes I could get to along the way. Thought I’d share them with you for a different view of the USA.

Here’s my first: a sinkhole just 12 miles south of Roswell, New Mexico — despite a silty gypsum bottom, this spring fed “lake” has a lot to see–including a bold, little green sunfish–ready to take me on for invading his hood.
